Toyota Safety Sense Windshield Replacement

The right glass for your exact Toyota, and a camera that sees straight again.

Toyota Safety Sense comes standard on most newer Toyotas, including the RAV4, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Tacoma, Tundra and Sienna. A forward-facing camera sits at the top of the windshield just below the rearview mirror. On many models it works with a radar unit behind the front grille or Toyota emblem. Together they run the Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert or Lane Tracing Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Road Sign Assist and Automatic High Beams. Lexus Safety System+ works much the same way.

Why the Camera Needs Recalibrating

The camera is held in a bracket bonded to the glass. When the windshield comes out, the camera comes out with it. Even when the new windshield looks identical, the camera's angle to the road can change by a fraction of a degree, and at highway speed that's enough to put lane tracing or emergency braking off by feet. Recalibration re-aims it to Toyota's specifications.

Depending on model and year, Toyota calls for static recalibration with targets, a dynamic road drive, or both. The radar behind the grille is a separate unit. It doesn't usually need attention for a windshield job, but it does after front-end or grille work.

Getting the Right Windshield for Your Toyota

Toyota offers many windshield versions for the same model. The camera bracket, the black "frit" border, a heads-up display, rain sensor and acoustic glass can all differ by trim. The RAV4 alone has several. We look up the right one for your VIN so the camera mounts correctly and recalibrates cleanly the first time.

Toyota's repair requirements call for genuine Toyota windshield glass on these vehicles. Toyota warns that on other glass the black ceramic border may block the camera's view, or the brackets the camera mounts to may be missing. Ask us about glass options for your Toyota when you call.

How We Handle It

  1. We match the glass to your exact vehicle. Give us your VIN or year, make, model and trim. The camera bracket, rain sensor, heads-up display and acoustic layer all change which windshield fits.
  2. We replace the windshield. At your home or job in most cases, with the right adhesive and a safe drive-away time before you leave.
  3. We recalibrate the camera to the factory procedure. Static (targets with the vehicle parked), dynamic (a set drive), or both, depending on what the manufacturer calls for. It's done on-site, right where the car is, as part of the same visit.
  4. We confirm the system is working. No warning lights, and the safety features come back on before we hand you the keys.

Because we recalibrate on-site, there's no second trip to the dealer. More about ADAS recalibration →

Toyota Safety Sense FAQ

My RAV4 shows a "Pre-Collision System unavailable" message after a new windshield. Why?

That usually means the camera wasn't recalibrated, or wasn't recalibrated successfully. It's fixable. Call us and we'll check it, even if another shop installed the glass.

Do Tacomas and Tundras with lift kits recalibrate the same way?

Recalibration is designed around the factory ride height and tire size. If your truck is lifted or has larger tires, tell us when you book so we can plan for it.

Is recalibration covered by insurance?

When the windshield replacement is covered under comprehensive, the required recalibration is normally included in the same claim. We'll handle the billing directly.
